Principal: Dr. Anthony Garza

Dr. Anthony Garza is a 1991 honor graduate from Edinburg High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995. In 2001, he received his Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Texas Pan American. In 2012, he earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UTPA. Dr. Garza’s dissertation was entitled, "Selected Factors Related to the Mathematics Academic Achievement of Eighth Grade English Language Learners". He holds Texas Educator Certificates in Secondary Mathematics (6-12), Principal (EC-12), and Superintendent (EC-12).

Dr. Garza has twenty years of experience in the education field. He was a high school math teacher for eight years. During this tenure, he worked at Hidalgo High, Edinburg High, and Economedes High Schools. Dr. Garza has twelve years of experience in administration. He served as Assistant Principal for a total of four years at the Edinburg Alternative Education Academy, South Middle School, and Edinburg North High School. Next, Dr. Garza completed five years as the Principal of South Middle School in Edinburg, Texas (2007-2012). He was honored as the 2011-2012 Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) Region I Outstanding Middle School Principal of the Year. Dr. Garza is in his fourth year as Principal of Johnny Economedes High School. Most recently, he was named TASSP Region I Outstanding High School Principal of the Year for the 2015-2016 school year!

Dr. Garza is married to Marisa Garza. They have two children, daughter, Loren, and son, Anthony Jr. Dr. Garza is determined to provide all students with a safe and positive school climate while challenging them with a variety of rigorous academic programs. Dr. Garza’s philosophy is, "Through dedicated teamwork from all stakeholders, every student from Economedes High School will experience academic success and graduate college and career ready". He enjoys serving as a role model to his students, proving that education is the great equalizer.
