JEHS Student earns Degree from Harvard

Sofia Velasquez, a 2010 Johnny G. Economedes High School graduate, received her Bachelor of Arts in Statistics from Harvard University in May 2014. She attended Harvard University on full scholarship.  Ms. Velasquez is currently teaching Algebra II at IDEA Pharr Public School through a two-year commitment to Teach for America, a non-profit organization.  She plans to return to Harvard and pursue Master’s in Business Administration.  Recently, Ms. Velasquez spoke to JEHS AVID students about her college and high school experiences.  She stressed the importance of extracurricular and community involvement, as she recounted her memorable experiences as an active member of Business Professionals of America and the UIL speech team while at JEHS. Furthermore, Sofia's migrant life story was depicted by our very own 2013-2014 "Sky's the Limit" Migrant Club in the play, "Harvest of Dreams." The students performed in front of over 1,000 students at JEHS and aired on CATS-TV for two weeks.

The J. Economedes community is very proud of Sofia and her accomplishments.
